Cavaliers Waive Two-Way Player JT Thor

The Cavaliers have waived forward/center JT Thor, according to the NBA official transaction log. This move follows the report that the Cavs intend to sign big man Nae’Qwan Tomlin to a two-year, two-way contract.JT Thor, Cavaliers, Cavs,. NBA

Thor, 22, spent three seasons with the Hornets before signing the two-way deal with the Cavs in September. He was the No. 37 overall pick out of Auburn in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Thor was officially waived on or before March 1, which makes him eligible for another team’s playoff roster (or the Cavs’ playoff roster, should he end up back with the parent club).

The 6-foot-9 forward appeared in 165 games for Charlotte, but played a limited role with the Cavaliers this season, making just nine appearances and averaging 4.7 minutes per game. In his limited time, Thor recorded 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting across 42 minutes.

Thor also spent time with the Cleveland Charge, the Cavaliers’ G League affiliate, where he averaged 14.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 24 Tip-Off Tournament and regular season games. However, his shooting struggles continued, as he posted a shooting line of .434/.276/.762.

Tomlin, 24, plays primarily power forward at 6-foot-10. He appeared in three games during his 10-day stint with Cleveland, averaging 3.3 points and 1.7 rebounds in 4.7 minutes per game.

He went undrafted out of Memphis before signing an Exhibit 10 contract with the Cavs in September. Tomlin then spent most of the season with the G League’s Cleveland Charge, where he averaged 15.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game in 35 Tip-Off Tournament and regular season contests.

Tomlin’s 10-day contract expired on Saturday night, giving Cleveland an open spot on its standard roster.
