When the buyout opportunity for Javonte Green surfaced in New Orleans, Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson made it a priority to reach out to the veteran swingman.
As relayed by Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, Atkinson’s pitch wasn’t just about basketball –it was about building a relationship. The two had crossed paths before when Atkinson was an assistant coach with the Golden State, and Green spent much of last season with the Warriors’ G League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors.
Atkinson’s familiarity with Green and his leadership in the Warriors’ system played a crucial role in bringing the 31-year-old to Cleveland. Fedor’s report highlights that Atkinson not only personally recruited Green but also encouraged the Cavs’ front office to complete the signing.
This kind of connection is what you expect from a coach with Atkinson’s background –someone who understands the bigger picture of team chemistry and the personal aspects that go into building a roster.
As the Cavs continue their hot streak — they’re now 47-10 after a gritty home win over Memphis — Green is taking the time to get acclimated. Even though he didn’t play in that win, he joined the team for shootaround and explained his decision to join Cleveland.
“I just felt like here was the best fit for me,” Green told reporters. “I’m a very team-oriented player and I think this team has that. I think it could be an easy fit for me.”
In a season that’s already been a breakout for the Cavs, adding a versatile, selfless veteran like Green could be another key piece as they push for the top of the Eastern Conference. With his experience and the strong connection with Atkinson, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Green quickly becomes a key part of Cleveland’s deep rotation.
