The Cavaliers have been in regular contact with the representatives for restricted free agent wing Isaac Okoro, sources told Hoops Wire, and they may have an offer in mind.
So far, while Okoro has generated some interest, there have been no offers. Per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, an offer could be coming soon from the Cavs as the sides work toward an agreement.
As we relayed on Hoops Wire, the Brooklyn Nets, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Clippers and Detroit Pistons are among those believed to be interested in sign-and-trade scenarios involving Okoro.
“The sense that I get in talking to people around the NBA, I’m not sure what the offer is specifically that the Cavs have made to Isaac,” Fedor said on the Wine & Gold podcast, via HoopsHype. They believe that it’s a fair offer. It’s a multi-year offer. It’s what they think he’s worth based on the construction of this particular roster and based on the role that he’s going to have for this roster. I don’t know exactly what the offer is that they have made, but the sense that I get in talking to people around the NBA is that it’s a multiyear offer in the annual range of $8 to $10 million.”
That said, a resolution for Okoro may not come until closer to training camp at the start of October. One Hoops Wire source, however, projected it could take place within the next week or two as the sides remain in contact.
As of today, the Cavaliers are one of just three teams that have yet to sign a free agent (with the NBA champion Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers being the others).
Okoro appeared in 69 games for the Cavs this past season, averaging 9.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.5 blocks, shooting 49.0% from the field, 39.1% from beyond the arc and 67.9% from the free-throw line.
As a restricted free agent, Okoro can either re-sign with the Cavaliers or sign an offer sheet with another team. Cleveland would have 48 hours to match an offer sheet for Okoro.
The Cavs selected Okoro with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft out of Auburn. He sports career averages of 8.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.4 blocks in 279 games.
