Report: Cavaliers Not Interested In Trading Georges Niang, May Move Someone To Get Under Luxury Tax

According to NBA insider Ian Begley of SNY, the Cleveland Cavaliers are not interested in trading Georges Niang.

However, the Cavaliers may trade someone to get under the luxury tax.

“The Cavs may move a player at the deadline to get under a luxury tax,” Begley wrote. “They have signaled to teams that they have no interest in moving Georges Niang to get under that tax. They have other avenues to shed salary, of course.”

Niang is averaging 8.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists this season while shooting 47.9% from the field, 40.4% from beyond the arc and 80.0% from the free-throw line. He’s making $8.5 million.

The Cavaliers have the best record in the NBA. They are 40-9 under first-year head coach Kenny Atkinson.

Niang has played for the Indiana Pacers, Utah Jazz, Philadelphia 76ers and Cavaliers. He has career averages of 7.2 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists.

In other NBA trade news, the San Antonio Spurs tried to trade for Darius Garland last offseason.

The Cavaliers, of course, were not interested in trading Garland.

“The Spurs did call Cleveland on Garland last June, sources said, when San Antonio still had the Nos. 4 and 8 picks in the 2024 NBA Draft available to trade,” NBA insider Jake Fischer wrote. “The Cavaliers did not show much interest in those conversations. Another name that’s always lingered as a potential franchise point guard of Spurs interest: Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball. The Hornets have never welcomed trade inquiries for their eccentric ball handler. And yet the Spurs, sources said, have tried to register their interest in Ball during previous transaction cycles.”

The Cavaliers have three All-Stars this season: Garland, Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley. Jarrett Allen probably should have made the All-Star team as well.

After all, Cleveland has the top record in the entire league.

It will be fascinating to see if the Cavaliers make a trade this week.
