While the Cavaliers stayed active until the final minute ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline, they ultimately decided not to make another deal.
They were, however, engaged with the Celtics for point guard Dennis Schroder, who ended up being traded to the Rockets. But the Cavs aren’t too disappointed, as their big trade took place over the weekend, when they acquired guard Caris LeVert from the Pacers.
There is still a strong chance that the Cavs sign a bench player either via the buyout market or the G League, perhaps as soon as this weekend.
They are expected to part ways with point guard Kevin Pangos, who Cleveland was unable to trade, despite some attempts. Per reports, Pangos will likely head back to Europe and sign with Russian power CSKA Moscow.
Either way, the Cavs (34-21) are perfectly content with their surprising run in the Eastern Conference this season, and didn’t want to alter their rotation in any significant way.
Beyond keeping an eye on the buyout market and G League, Cavs president of basketball operations Koby Altman will have to gear up for the offseason, when guard Collin Sexton becomes a restricted free agent. How LeVert and the Cavs do the rest of the way will surely play a role in the Cavs/Sexton negotiations.
