Cavs’ Darius Garland to miss at least a week with toe sprain

The Cavaliers received clarity on Darius Garland, even if the timeline remains fluid.

The Cavs announced that Garland has been diagnosed with a Grade one sprain of his right great toe and will be re-evaluated in seven to 10 days.

The injury occurred in the third quarter of Wednesday’s win in Philadelphia, and Garland underwent imaging Saturday at the Cleveland Clinic.

For now, the plan is treatment and rehab, followed by another check-in once the inflammation calms down.

The concern, of course, is context. This is the opposite foot from the toe injury that required offseason surgery and lingered earlier in the year. While a Grade one sprain is considered mild, toe issues have a way of being stubborn, especially for guards who rely on burst and change of direction.

Garland remains Cleveland’s second-leading scorer and one of the engines that keeps the offense organized. The Cavs have survived stretches without him before, but this season has already demanded more lineup shuffling than they would prefer.

There is no immediate long-term alarm. Still, this is one the Cavs will handle carefully, because the calendar only gets louder from here.
