Adding injury to embarrassment, Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell was forced to exit Game 4 against the Pacers on Sunday at halftime with what reportedly is a left ankle injury.
That’s on top of the calf strain Mitchell has already been dealing with for most of the series.
Mitchell and the Cavs trailed 80-39 at the intermission, so the outcome had already been decided. What looms larger is the fact that the Cavs were well on their way to a 3-1 deficit. Now, they have to win three straight — and the status of their most electrifying player is up in the air.
Midway through the third quarter and the Cavs trailing by 34 points, Mitchell was officially declared “doubtful” to return.
What’s even more doubtful is that coach Kenny Atkinson would put Mitchell back in even if he could go.
Game 5 is Tuesday in Cleveland. Should the Cavs get that one, they’d have to go back to Indianapolis for a Game 6. On the bright side, should they win two in a row, a Game 7 would be held in Cleveland.
Mitchell scored 48 points in Game 2, followed by 43 in Game 3. He exited Sunday’s game with 12 points on 3-of-11 shooting.
