Free agent shooting guards Garrison Mathews and Denzel Valentine are on the Cavaliers’ radar ahead of training camp, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.
Actually, Valentine is “interested in coming to Cleveland,” Fedor wrote, while Matthews is a “possibility” as well.
Mathews, 24, is 6-foot-5 and has spent each of his two pro seasons with the Wizards, averaging 5.5 points and shooting 38 percent on 3-pointers last season. He appeared in 64 games and was a regular part of the rotation.
Valentine, 27, is 6-4 and spent his first four NBA seasons with the Bulls. He was selected with the No. 14 overall pick in 2016, but has yet to live up to expectations.
Valentine averaged 6.5 points and 3.2 rebounds in 62 appearances in 2020-21.
The Cavs are clearly still looking for depth at the wing positions, preferably players who have some experience coming off the bench. Both Mathews and Valentine fit that description.
Cedi Osman and Dylan Windler are the primary backups at the shooting guard and small forward slots now, and their long-term futures with the Cavs are on somewhat rocky ground.
Glenn Robinson III, Sindarius Thornwell and Justin Jackson may be some other names to watch when it comes to Cleveland.
