Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey is among those on the Wizards’ radar in their search for a new head of basketball operations, sources familiar with the process told Hoops Wire.
Washington’s search is reportedly being headed by VP of player development and engagement John Thompson III and assistant GM Brett Greenberg.
Gansey, 40, was named G League Executive of the Year in 2017 for his role as GM of the Canton (now Cleveland) Charge. He had been working in the Charge’s front office since 2012.
He was promoted to assistant GM of the Cavs under Koby Altman in July 2017. When Altman was given the title of Cavs president of basketball operations in February 2022, Gansey was promoted to GM.
Along with Gansey, former NBA guard and current Pelicans GM Trajan Langdon has been mentioned as a candidate in Washington. It is not believed the Wizards have yet reached out to Gansey or the Cavs, sources said.
The Wizards are looking to replace Tommy Sheppard, fired after the season. They intend to hire someone from outside the organization, team owner Ted Leonsis said in a statement.
