Cavaliers point guard Ricky Rubio still has two years left on his contract, but from the sounds of things, he would like to return to playing professionally in Spain.
That, of course, would be when his NBA contract expires. And he may even want another NBA deal. That part we don’t know for certain. All Rubio is saying is that Europe remains on his radar.
“I am starting to consider my return,” Rubio said on the La Sotana podcast, via Johnny Askounis podcast. “Going home. To Barcelona. Close to home.”
Rubio, 32, played a limited role this past season after returning from ACL surgery in January. He appeared in 33 games, averaging 5.2 points and 3,.5 assists. He appeared in just three of the Cavs’ five playoff games, averaging a mere 5.7 minutes.
It was far from the magical half-season he put together for the Cavs in 2021-22. But again, he was coming off a major knee injury.
The second year of Rubio’s current deal is not fully guaranteed.
“I have two years left on my contract. Maybe one,” he said, via Askounis. “We will see.”
Along with the Cavs, Rubio has spent time with Timberwolves, Jazz and Suns during a 12-year career. Before that, he spent six years in Europe.
