Several rival executives have told Hoops Wire they expect the Cavaliers to move guard/forward Cedi Osman before the start of next season.
The Cavs have a glut of players at the wing position, especially after drafting Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji with the No. 14 overall pick. Sources say the Cavs are expecting Agbaji to become an instant contributor as a perimeter shooter.
They also believe that by training camp, if not well before, they will have reached agreement with free agent guard Collin Sexton. They also intend to hang on to guard Caris LeVert and his expiring contract.
That would mean the Cavs would have the likes of Sexton, LeVert, Agbaji and Isaac Okoro at the wing spots, with Osman the odd man out. If you remember, Osman’s defense landed him in coach J.B. Bickerstaff‘s doghouse for parts of last season.
If the Cavs do trade Osman, they would likely be seeking backup for center Jarrett Allen in return, sources said. They are likely to lose both Moses Brown and Ed Davis in free agency.
Here’s more out of Cleveland:
- Either the Mavericks or Knicks — whoever doesn’t land Jalen Brunson — will make an aggressive run at Sexton, sources said. Sexton is Plan B in both of those places. In Cleveland, he’s Plan A, with the Cavs highly likely to match any reasonable outside offers, as we relayed here.
- Opposing teams are curious to see if Okoro eventually becomes available, though most seem to think if he does, it won’t be until during the season. The Cavs may want to see what they have in Agbaji before floating Okoro in trades. But that hasn’t kept opposing teams from asking.
- As of now, the Cavs are planning to sign second-round pick Isaiah Mobley to a two-way contract and let him spend plenty of time with the G League’s Cleveland Charge. He of course is the older brother of All-Rookie teamer Evan Mobley.
- Without a doubt, the Cavs and Ricky Rubio are moving toward a reunion. But given the fact he won’t be available until about January, other options are also being considered. Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com listed names such as Tyus Jones, Delon Wright, Raul Neto and Aaron Holiday among the possibilities. Though sources recently told Hoop Wire that there is no interest from Jones’ camp in Cleveland.
- Either way, the Cavs want a veteran point guard to help take some of the burden off Garland, and presumably, Sexton and LeVert. Rajon Rondo won’t be back. The Cavs may also have an interest in Kris Dunn, D.J. Augustin and Dennis Smith Jr., sources said.

They should SERIOUSLY consider bring Javell McGee back! If we are moving towards the playoffs, we need a viable backup center and JMc would be excellent. He could cut down Allen’s minutes and continue to provide that leadership he showed when he was here. We jumped the gun moving him. He could have been the difference in 3 or 4 wins when Allen went down (secured playoff spot?) No more Ed Davis’s please!!!!
Cedi can really light it up from 3 when he has a veteran point guard setting him up we saw it when Rubio was on the floor. Or he can run your offense if you surround him with off ball specialists. He should get a lot of interest from veteran rosters that don’t prioritize youth development.
Unfortunately for the Cavs Cedi fell victim to trying to do too much in the second half of the season.
Osman wants out imo and knows he deserves to be on a veteran team where he can excell instead of having to take a back seat to developing younger players that are part of the new core.
what can the Mavs offer Sexton? I bet it isn’t enough to stop CLE from matching.
the teams that I would be concerned about stealing Sexton are exactly NONE at this point after the draft
and the player movement in free agency already.
Contrary to the arguments he doesn’t fit or that DG was so impressive without him , I say they need to keep him and see if this thing can work now that they finally have other pieces around Sexton as well as the one’s that were around DG last season that Sexton never had at his disposal in previous years.
