The Cavaliers have signed shooting guard Malik Newman to a 10-day deal via the hardship exception, the team announced in a press release.
Newman, 24, is 6-foot-3 and has been playing with the Cleveland Charge of the G League, averaging 17.8 points and 3.8 assists in three appearances.
He has been a regular member of the Charge and Cavs training camp, making his lone NBA appearance in 2019-20 while with the Cavs. He has also played for the G League’s Sioux Falls Skyforce.
Cleveland (20-14) has a number of players in health and safety protocols, including st6arting point guard Darius Garland. Also, veteran point guard Ricky Rubio went down with what appeared to be a serious left knee injury in Tuesday’s loss to the Pelicans.
Turns out, Rubio suffered an ACL tear to the knee and will be out for the season. So with Garland and Rubio (and Collin Sexton) out, it will give players such as Newman a shot to earn a spot on the team and perhaps the rotation.
Newman is the Cavs’ fourth hardship signing of the season.
