The Cavaliers intend to sign free agent point guard Killian Hayes to a training camp contract, a source told Hoops Wire and as first reported by HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.
Hayes is a former No. 7 overall draft pick who has struggled to find a role in the NBA. He averaged 9.0 points, 5.2 assists and 3.0 rebounds in six games with the Nets last season, shooting 38% on 3-pointers.
This news comes shortly after reports that the Cavaliers are signing center Thomas Bryant to shore up the frontcourt.
While details of Hayes’ contract aren’t available, it is likely a non-guaranteed deal for training camp. Cleveland may need an additional point guard as it waits for All-Star Darius Garland to recover from offseason toe surgery.
As of today, Lonzo Ball and Craig Porter Jr. are slotted in the position behind Garland. Second-year man Jaylon Tyson can also play the spot, the Cavs believe, as can Donovan Mitchell.
Hayes, 24, is 6-foot-5 and was selected by the Pistons with the No. 7 overall pick in 2020. His best NBA season came in 2022-23, when he averaged 10.3 points and 6.2 assists in 76 games. He has also spent time in the G League.
