Boston Celtics assistant general manager Austin Ainge may be among the candidates for the Charlotte Hornets’ head of basketball operations opening, per Marc Stein of The Stein Line.
Ainge joins a list of rumored candidates that includes New Orleans Pelicans GM Trajan Langdon, Brooklyn Nets assistant GM Jeff Peterson and Minnesota Timberwolves executive Matt Lloyd, as Stein also reported and we relayed here.
Ainge, of course, is the son of current Utah Jazz CEO Danny Ainge, formerly of the Celtics. The younger Ainge has been working in Boston’s front office since 2011, first as director of player personnel. He served as a scout for a team before that, as well as named the first coach of the G League’s Maine Red Claws in 2009.
Prior to joining the Celtics, he was an assistant coach at Southern Utah University under former BYU coach Roger Reid. Ainge himself played at BYU.
Former Charlotte GM Mitch Kupchak was moved into an advisory role earlier this month to finish out his contract. He is not expected to remain with the team after the season.
Another name to watch in Charlotte’s GM search in addition to those I reported earlier, league sources say, is Boston’s Austin Ainge.
