The Celtics are contemplating trading Al Horford in an effort to land another big man, according to Jared Weiss of The Athletic. Point guard Dennis Schroder and shooting guard Josh Richardson are also said to be available, Weiss added.
Boston has already agreed to one trade, acquiring center Bol Bol from the Nuggets in a three-team deal with the Spurs. (Celtics forward Juancho Hernangomez is headed to San Antonio.)
Horford, 35, is 6-foot-9 and is actually in his second stint with the Celtics this season, averaging 10.8 points and 7.4 rebounds in 36 appearances. His salary of $26.5 million next season is only partially guaranteed ($14.5 million), as Weiss reported.
Per Weiss, the Celtics are looking for another playmaker to fit next to wings Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. But that may be tough to do without throwing in some draft capital. It’s hard to know if first-year president/GM Brad Stevens would be willing to go that route.
Moving Horford may not be such an easy task, either. He remains a pro’s pro who always gives great effort and brings peace to the locker room. But age and money owed so often play into things.
“In his second stint in Boston, Horford has been one of the team’s top defenders, but he hasn’t been able to find a consistent offensive role,” Weiss wrote. “His 28.9 percent shooting from deep is his worst output since he started taking 3s in 2015, and the offense hasn’t revolved much around his pick-and-roll game this year.”
