While rumors have run rampant about Celtics wing Jaylen Brown, that appears to be exactly what they are — just rumors.
And instead of exploring Brown trades, the Celtics fully intend to sign Brown to a supermax contract extension, per Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe.
Along with that, the Celtics are expected to bring back forward Grant Williams, a source told Himmelsbach. Williams is about to enter restricted free agency, meaning the Celtics would match outside offers to keep him.
Basically, it appears Boston intends to run it back, mostly anyway, after finishing with the NBA’s second-best record and coming within one victory of a second straight Finals appearance.
As for Brown, Himmelsbach followed several other reports that also suggested the All-Star will be back on a major contract.
“In talking to people on both sides, I think there’s a very good chance they’re gonna find ground on that,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said of a Brown extension with the Celtics on The Hoop Collective podcast back in May.
A rival GM indicated something similar to Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports.
“Well, he would be crazy to pass on what Boston can give him,” the GM told Deveney. “They will have to go all in and he is going to have to take it. You can’t turn down what is going to wind up being $60 million a year. Maybe he’s happy in Boston, maybe not, but if you’re Jaylen Brown and you have the opportunity to be the highest-paid player in the league, you’re damn right you take it.”
