Celtics star Jayson Tatum may not be out for long after suffering an ankle injury in Monday’s road win over the Kings, per reports.
Tatum went up for a shot in the third quarter of the 113-95 victory, getting fouled by Kings center Domantas Sabonis and landing awkwardly. Sabonis was called for a close-out flagrant 1 foul on the play.
Tatum stayed in to shoot the free throws before being forced to exit.
“He seems to be doing OK,” Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla told reporters. “I didn’t see the play, but they made the right call. Fortunate that he was able to shoot the free throws. [He’s] taking care of it right now.”
Tatum finished with 25 points and was seen walking gingerly later. He told ESPN’s Ramon Shelburne that the ankle is “just sore” but that the team is “going to be cautious.”
The defending champions sport a 53-19 record and are just 4.5 games behind the Eastern Conference-leading Cavaliers. Boston’s swing through the West continues with a visit to the Suns on Wednesday. Tatum is already considered pretty doubtful for that game.
“I literally just asked him how he was doing, and he said, ‘OK,'” Mazzulla said. “He’ll do anything and everything to make sure he gets better.”
Tatum, 27, is averaging 27.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, 6.0 assists and shooting 45.5 percent from the field, including 35.2 percent on 3-pointers.
