Boston Celtics center/forward Kristaps Porzingis is back. After undergoing foot surgery in late June, the 7-foot-3 big man is set to make his season debut Monday night against the LA Clippers, sources confirmed to Shams Charania of ESPN.
This marks a significant moment for the Celtics as they look to build momentum in the early stages of the season.
Porzingis, acquired in a high-profile offseason trade in 2023, made an immediate impact in Boston, helping the team capture its first NBA title since 2008. His journey to that championship was nothing short of remarkable.
After suffering a rare tendon injury in Game 2 of the Finals, Porzingis returned in dramatic fashion, suiting up for Game 5 to help seal the series.
The 28-year-old Latvian star was a difference-maker for Boston last season, averaging 20.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2 assists, and nearly 2 blocks per game. His ability to stretch the floor offensively and protect the rim on the other end gave the Celtics an added dimension that proved vital in their playoff run.
Now, Porzingis returns after a meticulous rehab process. Over the past few weeks, he has participated in scrimmages with the Celtics and their G League affiliate, Maine, gradually ramping up his workload. His recovery is seen as a major boost for a team that already boasts one of the most formidable lineups in the league.
For Boston, Porzingis adds yet another weapon alongside Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, making the Celtics a serious threat to repeat as champions. Monday’s matchup against the Clippers will serve as the first step in his return to full form. If Porziņģis can stay healthy, the Celtics’ path to back-to-back titles just got a whole lot clearer.
