For all the noise surrounding Ja Morant, the Grizzlies have been consistent on one front. Making Morant available does not mean they are opening the door on Jaren Jackson Jr.
Multiple reports continue to indicate Memphis wants to keep Jackson and build around him. That has not stopped speculation, calls, or some outside-the-lines theorizing. According to HoopsHype‘s Michael Scotto, the Pistons and Celtics are among the teams that have registered interest.
The logic is easy to follow. Detroit has Jalen Duren and Isaiah Stewart, but has been looking for a frontcourt player who can space the floor. Jackson fits, having shot better than 37 percent from three on solid volume over the past two seasons.
Boston, meanwhile, lost Al Horford and Luke Kornet in free agency and moved Kristaps Porzingis, leaving a clear hole up front.
Still, league-wide belief remains that Memphis is not eager to move Jackson, who is 26 and under contract through at least 2029. That stance could be tested if Morant is dealt before February 5, but for now it stands.
As for Morant, Scotto reports interest from the Heat, Bucks, Kings, Raptors, and Pelicans, though the common theme is buy-low curiosity rather than aggressive pursuit.
An earlier ESPN report described the market as tepid, a word echoed privately around the league. Morant remains sidelined with a right calf injury and missed Thursday’s game in Germany.
Commissioner Adam Silver said he hopes Morant will be able to play Sunday in London, noting the league’s desire to showcase its stars globally.
Whether that happens or not, the larger picture has not changed much. Morant’s market is cautious. Jackson’s is theoretical. And Memphis, at least for now, appears intent on keeping one while figuring out the other.
