The Celtics have officially promoted guard Max Shulga from a two-way deal to a standard contract, the team announced.
The agreement runs through the end of next season, with the 2026-27 portion expected to be non-guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Shulga will earn a prorated portion of the rookie minimum for the remainder of the season.
The move also helps Boston remain under the luxury tax. Because Shulga is on a rookie minimum salary, his cap charge is lower than what the Celtics would have faced had they signed a veteran free agent.
Boston had been operating with a 12-man roster while maneuvering below the tax line and needed to make additions before reaching the league’s limit on short rosters.
The 23-year-old Ukrainian guard was selected with the No. 57 pick in last year’s draft and signed a two-way contract in July.
Shulga has appeared briefly in three NBA games but has spent most of the season with the Maine Celtics, averaging 16.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 7.2 assists in the G League.
