Celtics Owner Wyc Grousbeck Confident in Repeat Chances, Plans to Stay On Amid Sale

The Celtics are riding high, and so is Wyc Grousbeck. Fresh off celebrating the team’s record-setting 18th NBA championship at the White House, the Celtics’ longtime owner made it clear he’s not stepping aside just yet.Wyc Grousbeck, Celtics, NBA

Despite Boston Basketball Partners’ ongoing sale of its controlling stake in the franchise, Grousbeck says he plans to stick around for at least the next three years.

“It’s underway,” Grousbeck said of the sale during a media call Thursday. “The plan is that I will stay [in charge] for three more years. That’s what’s laid out.”

Beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess. But Grousbeck wasn’t focused on future ownership transitions. Instead, his eyes are on the team in front of him — a group he believes is built to repeat as champions.

“I think we’re contenders this year,” Grousbeck said. “And we can be contenders in the future.”

Hard to argue. The Celtics sit at 12-3, trailing only the red-hot Cavaliers in the standings. With a deep roster led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, Boston looks every bit a true championship contender again.

Thursday’s White House visit added another layer to the Celtics’ celebration tour. President Joe Biden, a self-professed “Celtic” fan (and even sporting the codename with the Secret Service), welcomed the team with open arms. Biden poked fun at his age compared to Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla, the youngest to win a title since Bill Russell, before accepting a personalized jersey from Tatum.

For players like Derrick White, it was an unforgettable moment. “Walking in, I was like, ‘I’m a little more excited than I thought I’d be,’” White said, adding that a visit to the Oval Office was a personal highlight.

But as Grousbeck noted, Mazzulla isn’t one to dwell on the past. The focus is firmly on the future.

For Grousbeck, that means more banners, more wins, and, perhaps, one last chance to solidify his legacy before passing the torch.
