Clippers coach Tyronn Lue was forced to sit out of Sunday’s thriller of a win over the Kings with back pain, the team announced.
Lue, 47, did make it to his pre-game media availability and gave no indication he might have to miss the game, per reports. The team did not offer details on his condition or when he might return.
Lue was replaced by assistant coach Brian Shaw, a former NBA head coach and point guard. Shaw has been with the Clippers since 2021 and served two stints with the Lakers, the team with which he won three championships as a player. Shaw coached the Nuggets from 2013-15.
Lue served as associate head coach of the Cavaliers from 2014-16, before taking over the LeBron James-led team in the 2015-16 season and coaching it to the lone championship in franchise history. He coached the Cavs until 2018, eventually taking the Clippers head-coaching job in 2020.
He spots a 347-246 overall coaching record (through the weekend). The Clippers are 35-29 and currently sit in eighth place in the Western Conference standings.
They beat the Kings 111-110 in overtime on game-winner from star forward Kawhi Leonard, who’s only shot in the OT came at the final buzzer.
Los Angeles now hits the road for games at New Orleans, Miami and Atlanta.
