The news caught the Clippers by surprise.
Several players admitted they were stunned to learn that James Harden is looking to find a new team, according to Tony Jones of The Athletic, even as Los Angeles has been one of the league’s hottest teams.
The Cavaliers have emerged as a serious suitor, with multiple reports centering on a framework that would send Darius Garland to Los Angeles if Cleveland can also secure draft compensation.
“Of course I’m surprised to hear the news,” Kawhi Leonard said. “But he’s got to do what is best for him. I respect his decision. At the end of the day, he’s still my brother.”
Harden requesting a move is nothing new. He has now done so with four teams in five years. What makes this situation different is timing.
The Clippers have gone 17-4 over their past 21 games, and even after Monday’s loss to Philadelphia, the group felt like it was building real momentum.
Still, the business side looms. Harden is believed to be seeking a new two-year deal this summer, while the Clippers have long prioritized preserving cap flexibility for 2027.
That disconnect may explain why this has moved quickly from rumor to reality.
“It was shocking,” John Collins said. “Our season turned around. This came out of left field.”
Coach Tyronn Lue kept it simple.
“James means a lot to this team,” he said. “You’ve seen it.”
