D’Angelo Russell is back with Brooklyn, and despite the move coming from a Western Conference contender to a rebuilding Nets squad, the former Lakers guard doesn’t seem fazed. In fact, he sounded eager about rejoining the team where he spent his first two NBA seasons.
Russell’s excitement was clear when speaking to the media on Wednesday, describing it as “a good feeling” to return to a place where he’s comfortable. “It makes the process a little easier to adjust to,” Russell said. “I’m just grateful for that.”
The Nets traded for Russell as part of a deal that will see him join a backcourt that has been lacking a true playmaker since Dennis Schröder was dealt to the Warriors. With an expiring $18.7 million contract, Russell will play a crucial role for Brooklyn, likely sharing ball-handling duties with Ben Simmons.
This pairing could actually work out well for the Nets, offering a mix of offensive skill and playmaking ability.
Coach Jordi Fernandez expressed his excitement about the addition, noting Russell’s strengths as a pick-and-roll player and his ability to organize the offense.
“We know the type of player he is: A primary ball handler, very good shooter, a player that’s going to be important for us,” Fernandez said. “He’s going to help this team because it gives us a different dimension with his ability to handle and organize players.”
For the Nets, Russell provides a much-needed spark to their backcourt. While Brooklyn may still be in the midst of a rebuild, Russell’s familiarity with the franchise and his offensive tools should help guide the team through the next phase of its development.
