De’Aaron Fox to replace Giannis Antetokounmpo in All-Star Game

Giannis Antetokounmpo will sit out Sunday’s All-Star Game, the Bucks announced.

That part was expected. Antetokounmpo has not played since Jan. 23 due to a right calf strain, and there was never much momentum toward him pushing it for an exhibition weekend.

He had been selected to the World Team in the league’s new three-team format.

The ripple effects came quickly. De’Aaron Fox was named as Antetokounmpo’s replacement by commissioner Adam Silver, though Fox will suit up for the USA Stripes group instead. Norman Powell shifts to the World Team, a move that fits given his Jamaican ties.

According to the Bucks, Antetokounmpo will still be around All-Star Weekend, helping coach the Celebrity Game on Friday before cheering on his World teammates on Sunday.

The bigger question, of course, is not about Sunday night. It is about what comes next in Milwaukee.

Antetokounmpo is averaging 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 5.6 assists, but the Bucks sit 12th in the Eastern Conference, outside even the play-in picture. League-wide trade chatter followed him right up to last week’s deadline, and his return timetable now carries real weight.

Milwaukee could try to make a late push if he’s cleared soon. Or it could take a more cautious approach and protect its lottery position.

Either way, this season’s direction likely hinges on how long Giannis stays in street clothes.
