Free agent point guard Dennis Schroder has agreed to a one-year contract with the Celtics, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
While terms of the deal were not reported, ESPN’s Jordan Schultz relayed earlier that the Celtics’ offer was for one year at the taxpayer mid-level exception, which amounts to about $5.9 million.
Schroder supposedly had been asking for a second-year player option and a deal worth the full mid-level exception, or about $9,5 million, Schultz added. It remains to be seen if that’s what he received.
Schroder, 27, averaged 15.4 points and 4.8 assists in 61 games last season with the Lakers. He reportedly was seeking a four-year, $84 million extension with LA in search of a larger deal.
Instead, Schroder became expendable after the Lakers were able to land Russell Westbrook in a multiteam team trade.
Now he will join a backcourt rotation that includes the likes of Marcus Smart, Payton Pritchard, Josh Richardson, Kris Dunn and others.
Schroder clearly was seeking a startig role, and with veteran Kemba Walker having been traded after the season, the door is open for that in Boston.
