Former NBA center Dikembe Mutombo is in “great spirits” while undergoing treatment for a brain tumor, his family said in a statement released by the NBA.
“He is receiving the best care possible from a collaborative team of specialists in Atlanta and is in great spirits as he begins treatment,” his family said. “Dikembe and his family ask for privacy during this time so they can focus on his care. They are grateful for your prayers and good wishes.”
Mutombo, 56, was a 10-time All-Star during a career that spanned from 1991-2009, playing for the Nuggets, Hawks, 76ers, Nets and Rockets. He is most widely known for his trademark finger wave after blocking shots.
A member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and native of DR Congo, his full name is Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo.
Since 2020 he has been working for Ask The Doctor, a service that connects people across the globe with top health-care professionals.
