Doc Rivers says Shams Charania angrily called Bucks over coach’s comments

It’s not always NBA players or coaches getting upset with the media. Sometimes, it goes the other way, too.

For instance, Bucks coach Doc Rivers had some fun at the expense of Shams Charania — and made it clear the ESPN insider may not have found it quite as amusing.

Rivers said he joked around All-Star weekend that Giannis Antetokounmpo should “trade Shams.” Apparently, that didn’t land as intended.

“I made a joke before All-Star where I said, ‘Giannis should trade Shams,’” Rivers said on FanDuel TV’s Run It Back. “Shams took that so personal that he actually called the Bucks and yelled at them to take it down.”

Yes, really. Rivers didn’t stop there, either.

“The NBA called the Bucks and are like, ‘Shams wants us to tell you this, but we really don’t care,’” Rivers added. “And then the NBA posted it!”

So, according to Rivers, not only did the joke stay up, it got even more exposure.

And then comes the kicker.

“I’ve heard from 10 different people that Shams is going to do revenge article on you guys and on you,” Rivers said. “And I was like, ‘OK, I don’t care.’”

That’s about as shrug emoji as it gets.

For what it’s worth, there’s been no such “revenge article” (at least not yet).

But if nothing else, it’s a reminder that in today’s NBA, even the newsbreakers can become the news.
