The EuroLeague has moved all of its “home” games involving Russian teams out of the country, as relayed by Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic.
Russia launched a military attack on Ukraine earlier this week, and Russian president promised Vladimir Putin declared there would be “consequences” for anyone who tried to intervene.
Euroleague has three Russian teams, and games involving those teams “set to be played outside of Russia will continue, except CSKA Moscow-Barcelona Sunday is suspended,” Vorkunov wrote.
Some teams have defected the VTB United Russian league as well.
“Zielona Góra and BC Kalev/Cramo have left the VTB United League, Russia’s top league. BC Kalev/Cramo (Estonian team) is an original member of the VTB, which has non-Russian clubs,” Vorkunov reported. “Zielona Góra is in Poland. VTB Bank, the title sponsor, has been hit hard by US sanctions.”
VTB United issued a press release on the state of things.
