For the second time in three games, Warriors forward Draymond Green got the ol’ heave-ho.
This time, it was before anyone even scored a single point.
The latest incident took place in Tuesday’s home loss to the Timberwolves as part of the In-Season Tournament (video below). Green was tossed, and rightfully so, after putting Minnesota center Rudy Gobert in a chokehold, as Gobert got in the middle of a scrap involving Wolves forward Jaden McDaniels and Warriors star Klay Thompson.
The front of Thompson’s jersey got ripped in the process, and both Thompson and McDaniels were ejected as well. Already, the Warriors were missing Stephen Curry, out with a knee injury.
The result? They’ve now lost three straight at home and have fallen to .500 (or 6-6 to be exact). Meanwhile, the Timberwolves are 8-2.
And yes, of the three consecutive home losses, Green was tossed twice. The first took place against Cleveland on Saturday when Green and Cavs star Donovan Mitchell exchanged words and shoves. Each received a technical — but it just happened to be the second of the game for Green.
One league source told Hoops Wire he believes Thompson and McDaniels will be fined, and that Green will receive a fine and a suspension. The source predicted Green will get one game, though he added it could be up to three.
Every generation has its good player who is also a hot-head, and Green is the modern day version. He still makes tons of winning plays at both ends of the court and is actually remarkably friendly and classy off of it. But his inability to keep his cool and his penchant for taking things too far … well, it wasn’t so bad in his younger years.
But now, the Warriors can barely stay afloat with him. And if this is the way things are going to go with Green, Thompson, Chris Paul and even Curry at the tail ends of their careers, then the Warriors may have some things to consider before this season is over. Namely, how much longer do they want to continue to allow Green to play these games before they decide they may be better off without him?
