Former Cavaliers draft pick and Richmond scoring legend Aron Stewart has died at the age of 75, the school announced.

Stewart was selected by the Cavs in the sixth round of the 1974 NBA Draft after starring at Richmond, where he remains one of the most prolific scorers in program history.

More than 50 years later, Stewart still holds the Spiders’ record for highest career scoring average at 28.1 points per game. He accomplished that in just two seasons.

Stewart arrived in 1972 after transferring from Essex County College and quickly became one of the most dangerous scorers in the country. As a junior in the 1972-73 season, the 6-foot-5 forward averaged 30.2 points per game, a Richmond record and the fifth-highest mark nationally that year.

He was named Southern Conference Player of the Year despite Richmond finishing 8-16.

Stewart followed that with another standout season in 1973-74, averaging 26.5 points and 12 rebounds while helping lead the Spiders to their first winning season since the late 1950s.

He earned First Team All-Southern Conference honors and was named an All-American for the second straight year.

Though drafted by the Cavs, Stewart ultimately chose a different path and built a life serving the Richmond community.

His legacy as one of the greatest scorers in Spiders history remains intact.

Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson also played college basketball at Richmond (1986-90).
