Report: Failed Kelly Oubre Jr. Trade Has Impacted Warriors’ Willingness To Make Blockbuster Deal

According to NBA reporter Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area, the failed Kelly Oubre Jr. trade has impacted the Golden State Warriors‘ willingness to make a blockbuster deal.

The Warriors acquired Oubre Jr. from the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2020. Oubre Jr. only played one season in Golden State before signing with the Charlotte Hornets in 2021.

“Much of that approach is related to the Oubre experience,” Poole wrote. “No longer are the Warriors willing to jeopardize their bottom line, sacrifice a bundle of draft picks or disrupt their roster for anyone who doesn’t rate a consensus. … The Warriors’ failure to add an elite player this summer is partly because they are more careful. The benefits of adding Paul George or Lauri Markkanen far outweighed the potential for catastrophe. There was relative accord among all involved parties, including core players Draymond Green and Stephen Curry.”

The Warriors tried to trade for Paul George and Lauri Markkanen this offseason. However, no deal was made for either All-Star.

George signed with the Philadelphia 76ers and Markkanen agreed to an extension with the Utah Jazz.

The Warriors will look different next season. Franchise legend Klay Thompson is now on the Dallas Mavericks. Golden State added Kyle Anderson, Buddy Hield and De’Anthony Melton after losing Thompson.

Last season, the Warriors missed the playoffs after losing the 9-10 play-in tournament game to the Sacramento Kings.

Curry, the greatest shooter in NBA history, signed a one-year, $62.6 million extension with the Warriors last week. The future Hall of Famer is under contract now with Golden State through the 2026-27 season.

Curry appeared in 74 games last season. He averaged 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists while shooting 45.0% from the field, 40.8% from beyond the arc and 92.3% from the free-throw line.

The Warriors drafted Curry with the seventh overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. Curry, who turns 37 next season, has career averages of 24.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 6.4 assists. He’s won four championships, two MVPs, one Finals MVP and two scoring titles.
