Grambling State and Southern University will play in the NBA HBCU Classic at All-Star Weekend on Feb. 18, the league announced in a press release.
The game between the SWAC programs will be held at the University of Utah, with NBA legends Willis Reed and Bob Love serving as honorary captains. Reed attended Grambling State, and Love went to Southern.
“I credit my career in part to my time at Grambling State,” Reed said in a statement. “The HBCU Classic will provide what is to most a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play on the NBA stage and serve as a platform for those interested in the business side of the game to gain industry insight and make lasting connections.”
Added Love, “My pathway from Southern to the NBA has opened countless doors for me. I am proud to support the NBA in using the game of basketball to celebrate the rich history of HBCUs and drive opportunity for the next generation of leaders both on and off the court.”
This year’s All-Star Weekend is being hosted by the Jazz.
This marks the NBA’s second HBCU Classic game, with Howard and Morgan State playing in the first last season in Cleveland.
