The expectation around the NBA has not changed when it comes to Ja Morant and the Grizzlies.

According to Damichael Cole of the Memphis Commercial Appeal, Memphis is still widely expected to move Morant ahead of the trade deadline, which falls on February 5. Morant is earning $39.4 million this season and, per Hoops Wire sources, there is mutual interest on both sides in eventually moving on.

The Grizzlies have been open to listening, and Morant does not hold a no-trade clause. Rival executives believe Memphis is prioritizing draft picks and young players, with multiple teams continuing to monitor the situation.

Why it has reached this point is no secret. Sources say Morant has grown frustrated with coach Tuomas Iisalo’s rotation approach, particularly the use of short shifts and frequent mass substitutions. The belief is that the system has made it difficult for Morant to find rhythm and consistency on the floor.

Morant has appeared in 19 games this season, averaging 19.3 points and 7.8 assists. The Grizzlies, meanwhile, sit outside the playoff picture in the West.

That said, nothing appears imminent. But around the league, the assumption remains that this partnership is closer to its final chapter than its next act.
