The Grizzlies have waived small forward Sean McDermott to help complete a trade that sends guard Patrick Beverley to the Timberwolves, the team announced in a press release.
In exchange for Beverley, the Grizzlies received shooting guard Jarrett Culver and power forward Juan Hernangomez. (Full story.)
McDermott, 24, is 6-foot-6 and went undrafted out of Butler in 2020. He then agreed to a two-way contract with the Grizzlies in November of last season. He appeared in 18 games overall, averaging 2.2 points and 1.1 rebounds. He also played for the G League’s Memphis Hustle.
“Because McDermott’s two-way contract covered two seasons, he had remained under team control to start the 2021/22 league year, but it looks like he’s no longer in the team’s plans for the time being,” wrote Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors.
With the move, the Grizzlies now have an open two-way spot. Per Chris Herrington of the Daily Memphian, undrafted forward Yves Pons is a candidate, given that Pons recently signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the team.
McDermott (there was a team option on a second two-way) ended up being the move to allow this to process. Looks like they'll let the Rondo thing linger for now, but you can assume he won't be on the training camp roster. https://t.co/seJs2h8IOu
