The Hawks appear to see CJ McCollum as more than a short-term placeholder.

According to Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal, Atlanta has discussed the idea of offering McCollum a one-year contract extension worth roughly $20 million once his trade to the Hawks is finalized. McCollum is headed to Atlanta along with Corey Kispert in the deal that sends Trae Young to the Washington Wizards.

McCollum, 34, is entering the final season of his current contract and is set to earn $30.67 million in 2025-26. Despite a long NBA career that began in 2013, he has technically never reached free agency, having signed multiple extensions along the way.

It remains unclear whether he would prefer to test the open market in 2026 or consider a short-term deal once the trade is completed.

Afseth reports that the Hawks view McCollum as a complementary ball-handler and scorer who can fit alongside their young core. Atlanta values his ability to play both on and off the ball, a trait that could help stabilize lineups as the team transitions post–Young.

McCollum started all 35 of Washington’s games to open the season, averaging 18.8 points, 3.6 assists, and 3.5 rebounds while shooting efficiently across the board.

A potential one-year extension would allow Atlanta to remain financially flexible long term while staying competitive in the near term, a balance the organization appears intent on striking.
