Hawks’ Jonathan Kuminga to be reevaluated after All-Star break

The Hawks will have to wait a bit to see Jonathan Kuminga on the floor.

Atlanta announced that Kuminga will be reevaluated after the All-Star break as he continues to recover from a bone bruise in his left knee. He hyperextended the knee in a January 22 loss to Dallas, a game that ultimately became his final appearance with the Warriors.

Kuminga was moved to Atlanta alongside Buddy Hield in the deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Golden State. The injury will keep Kuminga out for at least the Hawks’ next three games, with his earliest possible debut coming February 19 in Philadelphia, Atlanta’s first game after the break.

The timing is not ideal, but the change of scenery is still very much the point here. Kuminga formally requested a trade on January 15, the first day he was eligible to be moved, and while he expected to be dealt, he did not expect Atlanta to be the destination.

According to a source who spoke with NBC Sports Bay Area, the Hawks were not a team his camp had been closely tracking.

That said, Kuminga is embracing the opportunity. At 23, he remains a high-upside wing with room to grow, and Atlanta will soon have decisions to make.

His contract includes a $24.3 million team option for 2026-27, which the Hawks must decide on by June 30.
