The Hawks have officially announced the signing of center Gorgui Dieng, as relayed by Sarah K. Spencer of the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
“With the signing of Gorgui, we’ve added more size and depth to our frontcourt rotation,” Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk said in a statement. “He’s an experienced big with length who can space the floor and defend.”
Dieng, 31, has become a journeyman after a steady start of his career with the Timberwolves. He has also spent time with the Grizzlies and Spurs, averaging 6.8 points and 3.7 rebounds in 38 games overall last season.
His deal with the Hawks is for one year and $4.4 million, per Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.
“Given the reported terms on Dieng’s deal, the Hawks could either be using a portion of the mid-level exception or the bi-annual exception to complete the signing,” wrote Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors. “The BAE is worth about $3.7MM this season.”
Dieng will join a rotation of big men that also includes starters Clint Capela and power forward John Collins, as well as Danilo Gallinari, Onyeka Okongwu and possibly Jordan Bell.
Atlanta is coming off a run to the Eastern Conference finals and looking to make it a step further in 2021-22.
