RayJ Dennis already has three NBA stops this season. And we’re not even at the midway point.

The Hawks became Dennis’ third team of the year this week, handing the 24-year-old guard a two-way deal just days after he was waived by the Clippers. Before that, he opened the season with the Pacers.

It’s an unusual résumé this early in a season, even by NBA journeyman standards.

In fact, Dennis is inching toward a rarely discussed benchmark. Former forward Bobby Jones famously played for five teams during the 2007-08 season. Dennis is now more than halfway there before January.

This isn’t about production driving demand. Dennis has appeared in 14 NBA games this season, 13 with Indiana and one with Los Angeles, averaging 4.6 points and 1.9 assists. Over two seasons, he’s played in 25 total NBA games.

The real value proposition lives elsewhere.

In the G League, Dennis has been productive enough to keep getting callbacks. In seven games this season, he’s averaging 20.9 points, 5.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals, numbers that continue to earn him opportunities when teams need short-term guard help.

Dennis is 6-foot-2 and likely isn’t a long-term solution for anyone. But he’s proving to be something else. Available. Functional. Plug-and-play.

In today’s NBA, that can be enough to keep the phone ringing.
