The Atlanta Hawks say they respect the NBA’s decision to cancel their planned “Magic City Night” promotion, even if they strongly disagree with it.

The team released a statement after the league stepped in and shut down the event, which had been scheduled for March 16 in conjunction with Atlanta’s game against the Orlando Magic.

“While we are very disappointed in the NBA’s decision to cancel our Magic City Night promotion, we fully respect its decision,” the Hawks said. “As a franchise, we remain committed to celebrating the best of Atlanta, with authenticity, in ways that continue to unite and bring us all together.”

The promotion was intended as a tribute to Atlanta’s famous Magic City venue, a longtime nightlife fixture in the city. The Hawks had planned several themed elements for the evening, including involvement from principal owner Jami Gertz and the introduction of the team’s Hawks AF Podcast.

The plan quickly drew criticism around the league after it was announced.

San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet publicly asked the Hawks to cancel the event earlier in the week, writing in a blog post that the NBA should strive to promote an atmosphere that respects women.

Golden State Warriors veteran Al Horford later echoed Kornet’s stance on social media.

Ultimately, the league decided to intervene. NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the decision came after hearing concerns from a variety of league stakeholders.

“While we appreciate the team’s perspective and their desire to move forward, we have heard significant concerns from a broad array of league stakeholders, including fans, partners and employees,” Silver said in a statement.

The March 16 game itself will still be played, just without the planned promotion.
