The Heat aren’t likely to sign guard Kyle Guy to a second 10-day contract despite his strong performance, according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald.
Guy’s first 10-day deal expired Saturday night. Chiang reported that Miami’s salary-cap and roster situations are likely to keep Guy from maintaining his spot.
“I think they’ve obviously watched film and know what I do,” Guy told reporters. “I shoot the ball, I can be aggressive, get in the paint and make the right plays, facilitate, scrappy on defense. So they just play to my strengths. That’s how they’ve developed a lot of their guys to be like that. I already had some of the traits coming in, so I think it was just an easy transition. The feeling is mutual, they like me and I love it here.”
Guy, 24, will become a free agent minus another 10-day contract from the Heat. He averaged 9.8 points and shot 45 percent on 3-pointers in five games. So the former second-round pick likely will have plenty of suitors should he indeed become available.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity and making the most of it,” Guy said Friday. “So they’ll tell me when they think they need to tell me. Whether that’s at the end of the 10-day or today or tomorrow, I don’t know. So we’ll see. But I have no idea.”
In related news, the Heat probably won’t keep guard Mario Chalmers beyond his 10-day deal, either.
Chalmers recently returned to the team with which he won two titles alongside LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Chalmers told reporters he may want to turn his attention to coaching.
“As of right now, I still want to continue playing, continue my career,” he said. “But if a coaching opportunity presents itself the next couple years, I would definitely be interested. For me, I come from a family of coaches. My mom was a coach, my dad was a coach, so I’ve been around coaches all my life. It’s just something that I love the game of basketball so much that I’ll always want to be around it.”
