Hornets’ Jeff Peterson Not Putting Timeline On Rebuild: ‘Don’t Want To Overpromise’

It’s been eight years since the Charlotte Hornets got into the playoffs, so now it’s time to reshuffle everything.Jeff Peterson, Hornets, NBA

That included the front office, beginning in March, when current head of basketball operations Jeff Peterson was hired away from the Brooklyn Nets. Then coach Steve Clifford willingly stepped aside, moving into the front office, and former Milwaukee Bucks assistant Charles Lee was brought in to replace him.

The Hornets do have a nice, young interesting roster with promise. But Peterson said he isn’t putting a timeline on when that will result in success and a return to the postseason.

“I think when you start to put timelines on things, you get in trouble,” he said, via Mike Vorkonuv of The Athletic. “Just because we don’t know the jump (Brandon Miller) is gonna take. We don’t know the jump that (Mark Williams) and (LaMelo Ball) are gonna take.

“We don’t know what kind of season (rookie Tidjane Salaun) is gonna have. I think again, whenever you put a timeline on things like this, it can get you in trouble at times, just because you may overpromise and under-deliver. The only timeline we have in our head is just the day in front of us. How can we get better in this day? As long as we’re doing that, I think Charles and I will be pleased with the amount of progress that we make.”

Peterson added that he believes Lee is the perfect coach to guide this group.

“His tactical skills are great,” Peterson said. “He’s a champion. He’s won two championships (as an assistant). Which, obviously you can never, you know, there’s a premium on just being a winner, and he has that. And he’s just an amazing teacher and communicator. He’s going to do his best just to get everything he can out of each player. That’s a big reason why I went with him as well.”
