It feels like everyone in the NBA is watching the Ja Morant situation. But so far, the league isn’t exactly lining up to make a deal for the Grizzlies star.
On The Hoop Collective Podcast, ESPN’s Tim Bontemps said he doesn’t believe there would be a “robust” market for Morant. Fellow insider Marc Spears echoed that, saying multiple GMs told him they had little interest in trading for Morant even last summer, when Memphis quietly made everyone available.
And one current coach told Spears, “I’m not sure I’d want to coach him.”
It comes down to this:
Morant is owed max money for three more seasons. He’s been suspended 34 games. He has an injury history. And his production isn’t trending upward.
Add the league-wide trend — wings are worth more than ball-dominant small guards — and you start to understand why teams are hesitant.
The Timberwolves and Kings are monitoring the situation, as we relayed here, but nothing close to serious has surfaced.
For now, Morant probably still has more value in Memphis than he does on the trade market. So if this ever becomes real, it likely gets worse before it gets better.
