Longtime NBA forward Jared Dudley has agreed to join Jason Kidd‘s coaching staff with the Mavericks, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.
So Dudley, 36, has officially retired from playing. Veteran NBA insider Marc Stein first reported Dudley and the Mavs were nearing a deal to make him assistant coach.
Dudley is 6-foot-6 and was the ultimate energy man during his 14 seasons. He began his career in Charlotte, before spending time with the Suns, Clippers, Bucks, Wizards, Nets and Lakers. He won a championship with LA in 2020.
Last season, though, he appeared in just 12 games as his minutes began to decline. He was viewed as almost an assistant in uniform under Lakers coach Frank Vogel, so he should be a natural fit next to Kidd, in his first season with the Mavs.
“While Kidd and Dudley never played together, they have plenty of history,” wrote Luke Adams of Hoops Rumors. “Dudley played for Milwaukee in 2014/15 when Kidd was the head coach, and the Hall-of-Fame point guard was an assistant with the Lakers for the past two years.”
Former NBA players J.J. Barea and Tyson Chandler have also been mentioned as potential assistants, as Kidd continues to fill out the coaching staff.
