Jazz newcomer Collin Sexton will hit Utah this week to take part in a physical and presumably to start getting settled, as relayed by Sarah Todd of the Deseret News.
Sexton was part of the Jazz’s trade with the Cavaliers centered on Donovan Mitchell. The Jazz also received forward Lauri Markkanen, rookie shooting guard Ochai Agbaji and multiple first-round picks in return.
“Sexton is set to arrive in UT this week, Markkanen is overseas so its a little tricky,” Todd wrote, explaining why the Jazz have yet to announce the trade. “Once physicals are done, the press release will come out.”
Sexton, Markkanen and fellow newcomer Talen Horton-Tucker are but the start of Utah’s rebuild, as we relayed here.
Sexton led the Cavs in scoring at 16.0 points before being lost for the season to a torn MCL, appearing in just 11 games. The Cavs went on to finish with the eighth-best record in the Eastern Conference without him, and Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen went on to become All-Stars.
It should be noted that Sexton averaged 24.3 points in 2021-22, but willingly took a step back for the good of the team before his injury. He did so without a hint of complaint and the Cavs appreciated him even more for it.
He entered the offseason as a restricted free agent and never was able to come to terms with the Cavs. He will sign a four-year, $72 million contract with the Jazz, per Shams Charania of The Athletic. The deal is fully guaranteed.
Of course, the Jazz aren’t likely finished. Multiple reports have stated that continue to be on the lookout for trades involving Mike Conley Jr., Jordan Clarkson and Bojan Bogdanovic.
NBA training camps are set to tip off at the end of the month, with preseason games taking place just shortly after that.
