JJ Redick: Lakers’ volume will increase but only if threes make sense

The Luka Doncic trade gave the Lakers an instant identity last season. More threes. More space. More shots created off Luka’s gravity.

They jumped from 33.8 attempts per game before his debut to 40.4 after it, a top 10 mark in the league.

Some of that was Doncic letting it fly. Some of it was the open looks he created for everyone else. Some of it was the small lineups the Lakers used around him.

That has not carried into this season.

The Lakers entered Sunday’s game in Utah ranked 26th in three-point attempts at 32.3 per game. They were also last in makes at 10.9.

Not exactly the profile of a team built around one of the best shot creators on the planet.

Coach JJ Redick said he is not worried, via Khobi Price of the Orange County Register.

Before the game Redick said the volume will rise, but not at the expense of running good offense.

He wants threes off paint touches, kick outs, corner fills and transition spacing. He wants shots that make sense for this roster.

He also pointed out that league-wide three-point volume has stabilized and teams are simply leaning into what their personnel does well.

The Lakers have been one of the most efficient shooting teams inside the arc, leading the league at the rim, in floater range and in the midrange.

Redick said that will shape how the offense evolves.

And if the Lakers eventually get back to 40 threes per night, he said that works too.
