The Kawhi Leonard noise is getting louder, but that doesn’t mean it’s getting clearer.
Jovan Buha of The Athletic cautioned this week that much of the speculation surrounding Leonard remains just that, as the NBA continues investigating the Clippers’ alleged involvement with Aspiration and potential salary-cap circumvention.
“I hear different things,” Buha said, noting that reports have ranged from Leonard being traded to his contract being voided outright. Until the league finishes its investigation and determines whether any punishment is coming, Buha said it’s difficult to separate signal from noise.
That said, one thing is clear: If Leonard were forced onto the market, either via trade or free agency, the Lakers would be positioned to make a serious run. Buha pointed out that no team is projected to have more cap space this summer, and the Lakers also control three tradable first-round picks.
Still, there are complications. Buha referenced lingering bad blood between the Lakers and Clippers, suggesting a direct deal would be far from simple. If Leonard were traded, it would likely turn into a bidding war rather than a one-team solution.
Either way, until the league acts, this remains chatter. Loud chatter, but chatter nonetheless.
