Sacramento Kings guard Malik Monk didn’t even have a chance to test free agency, and you can be sure both sides like it that way.
Instead, Monk will return to the Kings on a four-year, $78 million contract, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
“His agents, Jeff Schwartz and Marcus Monk of Excel Sports, were able to begin negotiations on Tuesday with Kings GM Monte McNair and assistant GM Wes Wilcox, and Monk intends to sign the new deal once the league’s moratorium ends on July 6, sources said,” Wojnarowski wrote.
Monk, 26, appeared in 72 games this past season, 15.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists while shooting 44.3% from the floor, 35.0% from beyond the arc and 82.9% from the foul line — finishing second in Sixth Man of the Year voting along the way.
He indicated after the season that he wanted to remain with the Kings.
“I’m comfortable in Sacramento,” Monk said. “I’d love to play here again, for sure. I’ve been here for two years and made friends with everyone, including the training staff and front office. I’d love to be back here.”
Coach Mike Brown added that keeping Monk would be a big key to the offseason.
“It’s just as easy to see how important Malik is for our organization,” Brown said. “He is loved by his teammates, the organization, and the city. Hopefully, his free agency won’t last too long and he’ll be a King long term.”
Monk missed the final nine games of the season and the play-in tournament with a knee injury.
