Despite being linked to Ja Morant after reports surfaced that Memphis is open to trade discussions, neither the Timberwolves nor the Kings is expected to seriously pursue the two-time All-Star, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
Minnesota has explored point guard upgrades, but the focus remains on players with manageable cap hits.
Morant doesn’t qualify there. He’s on a maximum-salary deal that runs through 2027–28, making the financial lift a nonstarter for a Timberwolves team that has shown little appetite for adding another long-term max contract, Fischer reports.
In Sacramento, the fit is even murkier. New general manager Scott Perry has emphasized positional size, defensive versatility and physicality, along with discipline and accountability off the floor. Morant, while undeniably talented, doesn’t align with that profile, per Fischer.
The Kings are also reluctant to take on long-term money in in-season deals. That stance has stalled exploratory conversations with Toronto involving Domantas Sabonis, as Sacramento has no interest in absorbing the multi-year contracts of Immanuel Quickley or Jakob Poeltl.
