Forward Kyle Kuzma isn’t expected to return to the Wizards after opting out of his $13 million contract, and now, the Kings are believed to be among the serious contenders as Kuzma tests free agency.
Per Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, the idea of Kuzma signing with the Kings is gaining “momentum.”
Sacramento, of course, was able to clear some cap space after trading center Richaun Holmes to the Mavericks on draft night. Now, the Kings are looking to bring in a forward to play alongside point guard De’Aaron Fox, center Domantas Sabonis and the rest.
In the process, the Kings are likely to let forward Harrison Barnes walk in free agency.
“Even with a new deal for Sabonis, plus the Kings expectation to bring back versatile forward Trey Lyles, sources said, Sacramento could have more than $25 million to play with in cap room, according to salary projections provided to Yahoo Sports,” Fischer wrote.
For the record, the Jazz also reportedly had some interest in Kuzma, but that likely ended after they agreed to a trade for Hawks forward John Collins, as Fischer noted.
Meanwhile, the Wizards are undergoing a roster reset under new team president Michael Winger, trading shooting guard Bradley Beal to the Suns and forward Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics. They are highly likely unwilling to bring back Kuzma on the salary he’s seeking, reportedly in the $30-million-a-year range.
